Located 15 minutes from downtown Austin, Texas, the Domain is under construction to become a high-density, mixed-use destination with over 9 million square feet of development and 6,000 residential units. Numerous existing buildings and utilities made it difficult to create a well connected and logical development plan. Therefore Design Workshop was retained to develop a public space and streetscape plan to augment and bring coherence to the overall master plan. Working with the project architect, transportation and civil engineer, Design Workshop created a diverse range of streets, parks and plazas that are the backbone of the master plan, connecting a high-intensity urban plaza and shopping district to a large neighborhood park through a series of destination streets and smaller courts. The plazas create nodes of value that are the focus of higher density development that can establish a sense of place while surrounding existing buildings are removed. The plazas are connected by a series of signature streets that provide the setting for different types of retail and office space.
