Sioux City: Design Works
City-Wide Design Standards

Sioux City, Iowa

Sioux City was built from the industrious efforts of diverse cultures establishing neighborhoods that resulted in a hometown feeling. The architectural heritage of the city reflects this diversity and is essential to the character of Sioux City. Despite the rich history, Sioux City’s unique character and civic identity are not properly expressed in new architecture and urban design. Therefore, Sioux City retained Design Workshop to establish city-wide design guidelines as an adopted Design Element to their Comprehensive Plan and a preliminary step to Form-Based Codes. The Sioux City Design Works project identify form-based design principles utilizing a transect framework. It reflects the future vision of the community including the physical shape and character of the built environment. Identifying existing patterns that shape the unique character of Sioux City, the Design Works City-wide Design Guidelines provide principles by which buildings relate to streets and public open spaces.
