Vail Community PlanVail, ColoradoThe Town of Vail was undergoing more than a billion dollars worth of redevelopment without an updated community plan. Sound development had become as important to the vitality of the town as ski ticket sales. Balancing this development with the preservation of open space and providing affordable housing for workers were concerns. These dilemmas had to be addressed as Vail faced new competition from fast-growing neighbors such as Avon. Design Workshop facilitated a process that engaged the community and key stakeholders. The input gathered in this process helped create the new Vail Community Plan, a strategic road map to Vail’s desired future. Residents were responsive; more than 200 people attended two community meetings. Adopted in 2007, the document creates a framework for budgeting and planning decisions, allowing Vail to remain a world-class destination resort. |
