I-25 Broadway Viaduct Replacement: Broadway Streetscape
Denver, Colorado
Client: Colorado Department of Transportation
Design Workshop was hired to design a new streetscape system for Broadway as part of the larger I-25 Broadway Viaduct Replacement project commissioned by the Colorado Department of Transportation. Currently, the area underneath and extending from the I-25 viaduct is dark and unsafe, which makes crossing Broadway difficult and dangerous. To remedy this, Design Workshop proposed the addition of lighting, paving, furniture elements and a system of regularly spaced trees for the area. These design elements are intended not only to create a safe, pleasant environment for pedestrians and vehicles to travel, but are also meant to connect the neighborhoods to the north of the Broadway viaduct with the multi-modal transit facility and the new developments to the south. The design plan also includes improvements to the area adjacent to the viaduct on the east side of Broadway, where a series of stone terrace walls, landscaping and light wands wrap around the abutment wall. In the short-term, the new streetscape elements will first be constructed in a one-block area underneath the viaduct, with the intent that the new system will expand to the area further south along Broadway at the Cherokee Gates development and along Antique Row.
